one memory tht wil never fade away was tht of me bargaining wid an auto driver.....for a meagre 2-3 rupees, being a miserly girl. my mother was with me and my anger taking the better of me i shouted out in disbelief at the rate he was charging. the man...an illiterate fella shouted out a few incoherent abuses at me. i was so taken aback tht for a split second i wished to punch him in d face. wat audacity !!! - my mind kept repeating to me.
suddenly my mother gripped my shoulder....i looked back at her
her eyes were flashing a big 'no'
i felt so humiliated .....no not by d auto driver or by any one else
my actions humiliated me....living in a metro, a modern educated girl and some @#$*&^ fellow abuses me and i hang my head down
silently listening to him
impossibe..bt i prove d impossible
he zooms away very much satisfied at being not shouted at similarly
invisible tears of pain mark d pavement when strolling down to catch yet another auto
evrytime such thngs happen i m reminded of a scene from the film 'dilwaale dulhaniya le jaayenge', where d mother tells her daughter tht wen she hd held her for the first time in her hands she had promised tht her daughter wudnt face thngs tht she had.
but...yes there is a but...she tells her so painfully tht this is our world where a girl is not allowed to decide on her own, she always needs support
years back wen i saw d film for the first time it went across as any other scene, bt now i realise the importance of those lines.
very bad- really bad....no one is given the authority to chnge thngs except men???
how un-contemporary is tht??? - u wud say
but this is very much true
who knws if i had insultd the driver back he cud hv told/done thngs i even shudder to thnk of....

i agree that girls are quieter than guys and its unfair. esp when it is expected from them to be more gentle than their personality admits.
but still, dont u think that irrelevant of whether u are a girl or a guy, it was a wise decision not to quibble with the auto rickshaw driver ?
as far as changing things is concerned, i think its the women who are changing the world and making it a better place for living...... while men are busy fighting over mundane things like religion ;)
manini
